Cat Care Society is a limited-admission, nonprofit cat shelter located in Lakewood, Colorado, founded in 1981. For over 40 years, we’ve provided compassionate care, adoption services, and life-saving medical treatment to cats in need while fostering a vibrant, cat-loving community. Position Summary

The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, onboarding, scheduling, and engaging volunteers who support Cat Care Society’s programs and events. This role ensures that volunteers are effectively integrated into shelter operations, community outreach, and administrative activities while creating meaningful experiences that advance CCS’s mission. The Volunteer Coordinator works closely with staff across departments to assess volunteer needs, build systems that enhance satisfaction and retention, and foster a culture of compassion and collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage a comprehensive volunteer program that supports shelter operations, adoptions, veterinary services, events, and administrative functions.
  • Recruit, interview, screen, and onboard volunteers in alignment with CCS policies and procedures.
  • Create and maintain volunteer schedules. Coordinate with staff to ensure appropriate coverage for daily operations and special events.
  • Provide volunteer orientation, training, and ongoing communication to ensure clarity of expectations and safety protocols.
  • Recognize and celebrate volunteer contributions through appreciation events and regular communications.
  • Partner with program managers and supervisors to assess volunteer needs and develop role descriptions.
  • Maintain accurate volunteer records, including hours, assignments, and required documentation, in the organization’s database or CRM system.
  • Support event planning by coordinating volunteers for community events, donor activities, and outreach programs.
  • Collaborate with the Communications and Engagement team to promote volunteer opportunities and highlight volunteer impact.
  • Prepare reports on volunteer participation, retention, and program outcomes for leadership and board review.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for volunteer inquiries and provide problem-solving and conflict resolution as needed.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least two years of experience in volunteer coordination, community engagement, or nonprofit program support.
  • Experience recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers or staff.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work with diverse groups of people.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office or Google Workspace and experience with volunteer management databases or CRMs.
  • Ability to problem-solve and resolve conflicts professionally.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in nonprofit management, human services, communications, or a related field.
  • Experience in an animal shelter, veterinary, or animal welfare setting.
  • Familiarity with PACFA regulations or nonprofit volunteer program best practices.
  • Experience collaborating across departments or teams.
  • Bilingual in Spanish, ASL, or another language relevant to the community.

Working Conditions

· Ability to stand or walk for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds.

· Frequent bending, reaching, and handling of cats, supplies, and event materials.

· Must maintain professionalism, patience, and composure in a fast-paced or emotionally charged environment.

· Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.

· Administrative roles may be exposed to shelter operations and animals while on-site.
